In 2013, almost 1.25 million small-scale solar power systems were installed across the country, meaning that around 3.1 million Australians now live or work beneath a set of solar panels.

RenewEconomy has recently reported the steady rise of Australia’s love for solar power. Not only that, but the size of the systems being installed is on the increase. In just the last three years, the size of our systems has more than doubled, and the total capacity has risen three-fold (1kW in 2009 to 4kW in 2013). Industry experts are predicting that by 2020, we’ll be installing 6-12GW systems!

No doubt solar hasn’t been high on the agenda of our power providers and one of the main reasons they want support for rooftop solar to be removed. On site storage has also been drawing attention as an option for customers which could give the opportunity to be self-sufficient and go off-grid cutting out electricity providers altogether.

However, on a global level, we’re still a long way behind when it comes to our Solar PV Capacity. Despite Australia being the “Sunny Country”, we only just crack the top 10 list. But with our rising electricity prices and our abundant supply of sunshine, perhaps that will change!
